California Boulevard will be closed to traffic between Campus Way and the North End of Alex G. Spanos Stadium from 6 a.m. June 30 to 5 p.m., Aug. 8, Facilities Management & Development announced Monday.

The road will still be open to emergency and construction vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists; however may experience delays due to construction. While sewer systems are under construction , the following routes to campus are still open: Highland Drive, past the lower softball fields, and Grand Avenue, past Vista Grande Dining Hall.

The improvements are part of Cal Poly’s $35.5 million Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) project on the South of Swine Unit, which is meant to process some of the raw campus wastewater that’s sent to the City of San Luis Obispo’s treatment plant. The plant will disinfect levels required by Title 22 for irrigation of Cal Poly agricultural and recreational fields.

MASTER PLAN: Cal Poly Master Plan threatens student experimental farm — but students still have time to weigh in

According to Facilities Management and Development, the project will save money needed to purchase additional potable water and treat additional wastewater. According to the project summary, “potable supply and treatment capacity [are] identified as the primary constraints that would limit campus growth,” making the Water Reclamation Facility a solution aligned with the Campus Master Plan that aims to support sustainable campus expansion.  The plan, released in June of 2019, is a collection of building projects that aim to increase or improve housing, academic buildings and recreational spaces with the goal to enroll 25,000 students by the year 2035.

Inside Cal Poly reports several other construction projects to anticipate this summer, including Vista Grande Meadows, the John Madden Football Center, the Water Infrastructure Improvement Project, the Kennedy Library and the Student Success Center.
