A Cal Poly student died in a car crash in Thousand Oaks on Sunday, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

Sociology major Kenneth Romine lost control of his compact car and crashed into a tree in the median of the road at approximately 5 a.m.

Romine was the only person involved in the crash, and Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Don Aguilar said speed was likely a factor.

An autopsy is expected for today, but a toxicology report will take several months to complete, according to senior deputy Ventura County medical examiner Craig Stevens.

Romine’s Facebook page lists him as a graduate of Westlake High School in Westlake Village, which neighbors Thousand Oaks.

Corrected: A previous version of this story misattributed information about Romine’s autopsy to Don Aguilar. It has since been corrected.
