Flooding in and around the Student Services Building (BLDG. 124) near Spanos Stadium on Saturday caused numerous departments to be relocated to the Multi-Activity Center (MAC) indefinitely, according to University Spokesperson Matt Lazier.

A vehicle accident on N. Perimeter Road at Via Carta damaged a fire hydrant around noon Saturday, causing a leak in the university’s water system resulting in the flooding, Lazier said.

Departments that were displaced include the Disability Resource Center (DRC), TRIO Achievers, Student Affairs External Relations and Career Services, according to Lazier.

“The university is continuing to address the concern at Building 124 and, at this time, there is not a definite timeline for when DRC and other services will be able to return,” Lazier said.

According to University Spokesperson Keegan Koberl, traffic at Cuesta Avenue and Campus Way was closed Monday evening but has since reopened. There are some short term parking spots still closed on Cuesta Avenue.

Other services currently in the MAC include DRC testing and tram services, Lazier said.

Computer engineering senior Aditi Lappathi, who took her midterms through the DRC, was notified through email on the weekend about the relocation. Lappathi said the testing environment was a little different in the MAC, noting that the table was bumpy.

Lappathi also commented on the new testing location.

“For me personally, the MAC is further from the DRC, so I had to make that change, but I feel like it is an okay location,” Lappathi said.

Materials engineering junior Lance Allgaier, who also took a test through the DRC, said he was not heavily impacted by the location change.

“It took me a little bit to find the MAC because I haven’t been here since SLO Days, but that was the only minor inconvenience,” Allgaier said. “They are doing a great job.”

Allgaier said the testing location was quiet and just like usual.

The university is currently investigating the leak and conducting repairs, Lazier said.
