Late Cal Poly industrial engineering junior Matthew Hurlbutt, 21, had high levels of alcohol as well as cocaine and marijuana in his system at the time of his death, according to toxicology results reported to the San Luis Obispo Office of the California Highway Patrol. Hurlbutt died after being hit by a Toyota pick-up while walking south on Highway 101 near the Santa Rosa Street exit the morning of April 4. The investigating officer said the driver could not have avoided the collision.

Jesus, Liquor, Pot and Coke. Such a sad story, it’s too bad he decided to take his own life.
Please do not disgrace him like that. He did not purposely take his own life. He made a lot of stupid decisions that night, but suicide was not one of them.
Don’t talk about things you don’t know. The only substance in his body that was effecting his decision making was the alcohol. The other two were just residual from previous uses. Matt would never decide to take his own life. He was one of the happiest people I know, it was an accident, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and made a stupid decision. You shouldn’t comment when you don’t know the full story!
Hey Bevis,
Bad decisions are not made overnight. There is no full story. In his short lifetime, I am sure he made a bunch of them; unfortunately, this one caught up and bit him.
Okay, Marijuana and cocaine are still basically illegal, so Hurlbutthead stepped a bit over the line here. Maybe you don’t think this was a decision, but things are given a cautionary note for a reason. Like, don’t pilot a plane or walk across Santa Rosa Street stoned. And mixing anything with alcohol is just another stupid decision, right?
And if this guy was such a sweet fella, where were his friends to see him home? or were they stoned ,too?
Oh yeah, where did he get his stuff?
Food for thought,
Roger Freberg
Hey Roger Freberg,
I was just wondering if you ever went to college?? At 4-Year institutions most students tend to go home for major holidays, like let’s say Easter? Oh well funny thing, it was Easter Sunday when Matt was hit. Don’t be such an ignorant F***. Oh, and NEWSFLASH, bad decisions are made overnight. I mean I don’t know too many people who clearly think a bad decision through and then still go through with it…
Food for thought,
Mel
well put Roger,
I think his “friends” need a reality check. They warn people not to talk about “things they don’t know” but they don’t have a clue themselves.
Do you have any idea how hard it is to get down to the 101 freeway? It is a bit of a hike, and since nobody on here is the detective on the case, nobody can say what Hurlbutt’s intentions were.
Simply because he was smiling on facebook with lots of digital “friends” doesn’t make him the “happiest person” This entire campus needs a reality check.
-Brian Gillis, Carson Starkey, Kristen Smart, Charles Tamae, more research will uncover a whole lot more, all of this and the Mustang Daly decides to run a full page story on the god damn rx bandits.
Marcus R,
Do you have any idea how easy it is to walk onto the 101 freeway in San Luis Obispo???? It’s not a hike..in fact most on-ramps are streets that turn into the freeway. So let’s do a little investigating before we start forming opinions and passing judgements on issues that we, excuse me, YOU have absolutely no ACCURATE knowledge about.
-Mel
Get real. This is not the only person at this campus who would test positive for weed, coke and alcohol on any given night. Its 4/20 for crying out loud. How many people are going to be down at pint night tonight coming down from a fresh high?
Its one thing to hold him responsible for his poor and most likely heavily inebriated decision. As far as blaming his friends go, have you ever been downtown and decided to go home? Do you always escort every friend home? Do you know anyone who smokes weed? Do you hassle them about quitting? Its easy to point fingers right now, but this is just a case where poor choices all came together tragically.
You Roger Freberg made a pretty dumb argument. “And mixing anything with alcohol is just another stupid decision, right?” Been there done that and yet I didnt try to cross the freeway. Many others have, do and will continue to mix drugs without the same consequences. And how about “And if this guy was such a sweet fella, where were his friends to see him home? or were they stoned ,too?” Im going out on a limb here and saying either you havent smoked weed or you will claim that you did and never like it. Point being, you have no ability to judge what the effects are on his friends. Regardless of whether or not they were high, im sure any of them would have walked him home had they known. Read my escort comment above.
As for Marcus R, it has been documented that he used the freeway as a shortcut to get home from the bars. So im afraid its you who doesnt have a clue. And as far as the list of deceased that you listed, you cuold not have found a more diverse cause of deaths.
I have been pretty disgusted with a lot of comments made about these articles. Learn from his mistakes but dont think that any of us or yourselves haven’t made stupid decisions and just not caught the wrong twist of luck.
NOW this was well said!
This should be a lesson to kids…as parents we hope we have given you the right tools to make good decisions. Matt’s parents have to live with his actions leading to his death forever and wonder what went wrong that night.
Sam youre an asshole.
