With a late surge in the final round at Northwestern’s Windon Memorial, freshman Frederick Egnatios birdied the last four out of five holes to share the individual title for Cal Poly Men’s Golf.

Egnatios split the individual win with Zhenxian Zhang of UC Davis, helping the Mustangs tie for seventh place at the par-70, 6,716-yard Onwentsia Club. Cal Poly’s total of 847 (seven-over) was one shot short of setting a new program tournament scoring record.

In only his second collegiate tournament, Egnatios entered the final round on Tuesday tied for first place at five-under over the first 36 holes.

With a staggering 65 in the opening round, the Arizona native had already recorded the third-lowest 18-hole total in program history, but had his eyes set on the tournament win.

After a bogey on the 13th, midway through the final round, the freshman found himself falling behind to the eventual co-winner Zhang, who fired a six-under 64 before Egnatios had finished his round.

Egnatios would eventually birdie four out of his last five holes to shoot a three-under 67 and tie Zhang for the win.

Egnatios’ three-round, eight-under 202 is the third-lowest tournament score in program history and secured Cal Poly’s sixth individual win in the past five seasons.

Sophomore Vidur Subramaniam placed 30th with a two-over 212 while senior Jack Jarvis finished 43rd, shooting a five-over 215. To round out the starting five, freshman Leo McDonough was 64th, and sophomore Rafael Bobo-Lloret was right behind in 68th.

The Mustangs will return to action on Oct. 19-21 to compete in the Saint Mary’s Invitational at the Bayonet & Black Horse GC in Seaside, Calif
