The Cal Poly Mustangs scored two goals in the final 11 minutes to defeat the UCSB Gauchos 2-1 on Friday night.
9:13 – Patrick Sigler hits a penalty kick in the final minute to put the Mustangs up 2-1.
8:52 – It’s crunch time here at Spanos with the Gauchos leading 1-0 in the 72nd minute. Cal Poly has maintained heavy pressure on the UCSB but have nothing to show for it.
8:45 – Malki just provided the Mustangs with their best chance of the night, but Nolan Moore put a header just high. A little scuffle on the field with Gaschen and Glodack brought some yellow cards out. That’s why they call it a rivalry.
8:25 – Second half begins at Spanos with the Mustangs looking for a little magic. The stands are packed and are looking for a reason to cheer. It’s a sellout or more of a “freeout” as about 8,000 students are watching the action. UPDATE: The sellout is complete, the second in Cal Poly soccer history. Now tied for the 7th most fans at a regular season NCAA soccer match.

8:00 – It’s halftime here at Spanos Stadium with the Gauchos up 1-0. Right now a lucky contestant is about to not make his shot into the bed of a pickup truck from 50 yards out…and it will never ever happen.
7:41 – He’s baaaack Chris Gaschen retakes the field with the Mustangs trailing 1-0. Dakota Collins is out along with George Malki.
7:40 – Gauchos are controlling the pace now as they lead 1-0. Here’s a tweet from a fan @claytongraham “I like how the pa guy thinks we can hear him. #BlueGreen” The PA guy continues on announcing undaunted by the noise.
7:20 – Kyle Montgomery wants a piece of the action early. He took a shot from about 30 yards out and still made the keeper sweat, putting it just high. But it’s UCSB that gets on the board first. Sam Garza takes a breakaway to the house. Garza is quick to go taunt the Maniacs in the corner. This one is gonna get chippy fast.
7:15 – Poly is getting the best looks early. Dakota Collins has found his way deep into Gaucho territory twice.
7:10 – It’s time. Blue/GREEN is back.
7:00 – Kickoff is any minute, but here’s a quick reminder of the dramatic conclusion of last year’s match. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPH4yCM9AR4. Student section is taking up over half the stands in the bleachers on the far side. Press box side stands were filled up eons ago.
6:40 – Twenty minutes until kickoff and the student sections are nearly 80 percent full, although my co-reporter Stephan Teodosescu says the whole stadium is for students tonight. Both teams are out warming up.
6:01 – One hour until game time and the first fan I talk to is from Santa Barbara. Let’s just say there’s no love lost. He’s a Poly fan without question.
5:52 – We have our first real chant of the night. “Wherever we go, people want to know” etc.
5:30 – Gates are officially open at Spanos and the first chant of the night begins…it was short lived.

nice article. It’d be great if you start putting up Big West standings in the paper so we can see the playoff race after each game.
