Mustang News reporter Ashley DeVriend looks into why the Robert E. Kennedy Library received the 2014 Excellence in Academic Libraries award.

The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) recognized the Kennedy Library for its student engagement. More specifically, they were impressed with the Library Research Assistance Technicians — better known as LibRATs.

“We can help you cite your papers,” LibRAT and business administration junior Heather Dorris said. “We can help you do the research for your papers. We won’t write your papers and we won’t edit them, but we can help you if you’re stuck on finding a topic.”

Working at the research help desk, helping students find previous senior projects and teaching research classes are just a few of Heather’s daily tasks as a LibRAT.

“Mainly, we go into databases that are available at the library, as well as any other questions they may have,” Dorris said.

Kennedy Library is the first university library in California to receive the honor. The library will receive $3,000 at a ceremony to be held in spring.
