New eatery brings Arabic spice to SLO with its pitas, pizzas

Getting tired of late-night trips to Pita Pit? If so, Petra, a new restaurant opened in San Luis Obispo that specializes in Mediterranean cuisine and pizza may be able to help you out.

Samir Aburashed and his father Todd opened Petra in early December. The restaurant is located on the corner of Higuera and Toro streets, ironically situated next to Jaffa – one of the few restaurants in town that serves a similar style of food.

Students come from China to master dairy science

The College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences will host the first two students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University this fall in a new joint dual master’s degree program.

The students already have a Master of Science in food science and technology from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and will attend Cal Poly for the second half of a two-and-a-half year master’s degree program.

Hope deserves to be believed

It was very disappointing to read the cynical staff editorial on Jan. 20, “Today we inaugurate a man, not a God.” We can agree that we should not expect miracles and any instant results. However, it is sad to see the editorial denigrating the credible message of hope and optimism from the incoming president and his cabinet populated with smart appointees.

Cal Poly students package green future

Three Cal Poly programs have launched a program that has students working with major companies to deal with environmental issues facing the packaging industry.

Cal Poly’s industrial technology department in conjunction with the Orfalea College of Business and the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences started Cal Poly’s Consortium on Packaging Science and Technology to offer research and development services to an impressive list of companies, including Microsoft and Safeway, to design packaging materials that are sustainable and eco-friendly.
