Student-run radio station plans to move on up

This year, Cal Poly’s radio station, KCPR 91.3 FM, will upgrade its studio and expand its coverage area. The station, which began broadcasting in 1968, is one of the only nonprofit college radio stations and is completely run by student volunteers.

The current studio is located on the second floor of building 26 and will be moved to the third floor next to the CPTV room.

Alcohol: how much is too much?

I was in Puerto Rico last week, laughing and sipping drinks with friends and family, when a man got up on a nearby table and started dancing, spilling his drink all over himself.

He then dragged his companions up with him and urged onlookers to do the same until, eventually, everyone was dancing on their tables, drinks in hand.

Beck leads former Mustangs in NFL

Jordan Beck is making the most impact so far this preseason of any of the four former Cal Poly football players currently in NFL training camps.

Beck, a backup middle linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons, has recorded five tackles in two games. He also had a pair of stops on special teams Aug.

Poly ranked 11th-best golf school

Both the Cal Poly men’s and women’s golf teams were granted major bragging rights when Golf Digest ranked each team No. 11 nationally for academics and golf in the magazine’s September 2006 issue.

The magazine said the list was “for juniors who are excellent students first, golfers second, these schools provide the absolute best education and an opportunity to play.

Cable news resembles tabloids, not journalism

Tonight on cable news: a bunch of stuff you really don’t need to know.

So that may not seem like a breaking story, but it’s certainly becoming more and more true.

With about 1,056 minutes to fill every day, cable’s three main news channels – CNN, Fox and MSNBC – have evolved into entertainment broadcasts rather than informative sources.
