Cal Poly’s University Police Department (UPD) was called to Poly Canyon Village (PCV) at 5:10 p.m. Feb. 4 in response to smoke coming out of a dumpster behind the Poly Canyon Village dining area.

Upon arriving at the scene, police determined that the smoke was coming from hot coals that had been thrown into the dumpster, according to the report from UPD.

The sergeants on call used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the coals, but the San Luis Obispo Fire Department was called to secure the situation, according to the report.

Upon arrival, the fire department extinguished the coals with water.
