The Cal Poly women’s soccer team (6-6-0, 1-0-0 Big West Conference) shut out Long Beach State (4-5-3, 0-1-0) by a score of 3-0 on Friday at George Allen Field.

In their first stab at conference play this season, the Mustangs scored their first goal in the 25th minute when sophomore defender Nicole Wheeler, assisted by sophomore forward Megan Abutin, headed a shot from the middle of the goal box. Abutin now holds the No. 1 slot in assists this season.

The half ended with a saved shot by junior forward Elise Krieghoff. Krieghoff, Cal Poly’s top scorer, made a total of three shots throughout the first half.

Freshman defender Gianna Rosati also contributed three shots in the half.

The Mustangs stayed strong through the second half, as junior defender Allie Begin received a cross on the left side of the box and curled the ball to the upper right to score.

In the 75th minute, senior midfielder Sara Lancaster, assisted by Abutin, scored her first goal of the season and Cal Poly’s third of the game.

The Mustangs will continue Big West play on Sunday, when they come home to play Cal State Northridge at 12 p.m.
