Students can get fresh fruits and vegetables for free today by bringing their PolyCard to the University Union Plaza.
ASI Student Government and ASI Events are partnering to run a farmers’ market from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be roughly $8,000 of fresh produce.
Produce items will include apples, avocados, carrots, cucumbers, carrots, nuts and strawberries from local farms, according to Tanner Schinderle, political science junior and current ASI chief of staff.
Schinderle said that ASI has worked toward a farmers’ market for years.
“There was a survey a couple years ago that found the no. 1 student request,” Schinderle said. “Over 80% of students wanted an on-campus farmers market.”
Along with produce, the event will feature a handful of giveaways from local businesses. Students can win a record player and pack of records from Boo Boo Records, two Palm Theatre season tickets and artwork from Buen Dia.
“We also have free music and a bunch of local business giveaways too,” Schinderle said. “All with the idea of promoting our city relations, local businesses, as well as just kind of bringing that farmers market that students have asked for.”
The event overlaps with SLO Music Hour from 11 a.m. to noon, featuring live music from band frogslo. ASI will offer free sandwiches and coffee, according to the Cal Poly ASI Instagram.
“This is a great opportunity to hear live music from a student band, be a part of the community,” Schinderle said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
