The federal government is officially shut down today after weeks of debate in Washington. In a memo released late this week, the Department of Education said it will furlough more than 90 percent of its staff during the first week of the shutdown.
Only those staffers working for presidentially-appointed employees and some managing financial aid will continue to work. While Pell grants and loans will continue, federal work-study will not.
The shutdown came after the White House and Democratic Senate failed to meet the demands of the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. The Senate and White House refused to tie to the budget delays of the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare.
