The San Luis Obispo Police Department (SLOPD) started enforcing the Halloween Safety Enhancement Zone at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31. It will conclude Nov. 1 at 7:00 a.m.

SLOPD Lt. Brian Amoroso said during this period, double fines will be used for administrative citations, such as open containers of alcohol, urinating in public and underage drinking.

“Halloween is typically one of the busiest days of the year,” Amoroso said. “There’s especially an increase in underage drinking.”

Amoroso also said downtown San Luis Obispo is exceptionally busy.

According to SLOPD, the Halloween Safety Enhancement Zone is unrelated to the Party Registration Application, which gives students the chance to submit a form a week in advance to notify SLOPD of a party. The registration is only for parties held on Friday, Saturday or a Sunday prior to a holiday.

“The party registration is just to mitigate officers from showing up,” Amoroso said.

Students are advised by Amoroso and SLOPD to be aware of the Halloween Safety Enhancement Zone and act responsibly.

“Go have a good time and don’t break the law,” Amoroso said.
