The $78 million reconstruction of Kennedy Library is ahead of schedule and projected to open at the start of the next academic year. Project Manager John Sandman said he is confident the project will make the target date.

New features for students include a first and second-floor 24-hour hub, all-gender and ADA compliant bathrooms, new classrooms and a Julian’s Cafe on the first level.

The Kennedy Library Transformation is a part of Cal Poly’s Master Plan, Sandman said.

The renovated library will be seismically strengthened, more energy efficient and have a new HVAC system to provide air conditioning and cooling in the building, Sandman said. LED lighting will be added throughout the building as well.

The transformation also involves a roof replacement and a main circulation staircase with courtyard renovations, Sandman said.

“It was time for a renewal of systems and, most importantly, time to make changes that better serve the student needs in the 21st century,” Sandman said.

He acknowledged that the project has been tough on the senior class, but other classes are going to benefit.

Computer engineering senior Kylar Huynh said he was a student when the Kennedy Library was open and he used to go there a lot. Now, Huynh studies in the University Union.

“I’m excited for the Kennedy Library to open up next year because it is going to give me a new place to study,” Huynh said. “The closure hasn’t impacted me at all, but it would be nice to be able to go back to the library.”

Agricultural systems management freshman Mac Moretti said he usually studies in The Lounge or his dorm.

Sandman does not anticipate construction-related issues that will reroute any bus routes or shut down major roads in the future.

“The thing I’m most excited about is completing construction and giving the building back to students and staff,” Sandman said.
