I wrote about the global warming (AGW) debate last week, evoking the predictable feedback and flack, some of it apt and intriguing, some of it silly and sophomoric.
I daresay that it seems to ruffle the feathers of many when a lowly, non-scientist half-wit commoner hazards an opinion on this issue.
It is Saturday night and I am seated in the exhibition space at the San Luis Obispo Art Center awaiting the start to a film titled, “Splendid Splinters: The Armand LaMontagne Story.” The low hum of small talk dies down as attendees get adjusted, sipping glasses of wine provided by the Art Center.

Thanks to the enterprising workers at the Cal Poly organic farm, patrons at the Maxine Lewis Memorial Shelter enjoy more than canned foods donated by the community. Recently, the community supported agriculture program at the organic farm teamed up with the shelter to provide a variety of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables for shelter users to dine on.
A big shadow has been cast over the magic of the sun. Someone stole the solar panel, control box and steel holder that powered a fountain at the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden.
This was a project carried out by volunteers with the keen help of the children who attended Plant Family Camp.

In a recent report in Environmental Health News, UC Davis researchers have concluded that California’s sevenfold increase in autism cannot be explained by changes in doctors’ diagnoses and most likely is due to environmental exposures. The scientists who authored the new study advocate a nationwide shift in autism research to focus on potential factors in the environment that babies and fetuses are exposed to, including pesticides, viruses and chemicals in household products.
The Cal Poly Wheelchair Foundation held its Grand Opening of “Viva el Peru” exhibit on Jan. 8 in the Cal Poly Performing Arts Center. The exhibit, which is designed to raise funds to purchase wheelchairs for people in third world countries, featured the work of photographers Kori Savoie, Kali Bills and Noelle Luchino.
I suppose it was the cover that first caught my eye in Barnes & Noble: hot pink bubble letters scrawling out the words, “Dear Diary,” hovering above the head of a clearly downtrodden girl nursing a bloody nose amongst the seemingly tame books surrounding it.
