As mind numbing as Cal Poly academic life can get, it’s nice to know that one can turn to the Internet for immediate stress relief. Seriously, what could be better than reading the latest “Yo’ momma” joke or watching some jackass try to launch a bottle rocket out his bum for an instantly amusing stress killer?

However if you’ve turned to the Internet as a Messiah for entertainment and escapism from the daily grind, where do you go to find a collection of the latest jokes, funny video clips, or simply a good read?

Chances are, if you have ever yearned to watch that “Dude gets kicked in the nuts” video then you’ve found your way over to the modicum of Web sites that bring you all things “viral media.

1960 Poly football team to be honored

The fatal crash that claimed 18 lives of the 1960 Cal Poly football team will receive an honorary induction into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend.

A private ceremony will take place Friday to dedicate the new Mustang Memorial Plaza.

The plaza is 15,000 square feet and will honor the members of the team who lost their lives in the Oct.

A not so hot summer

I am sure I am not alone when I say that was another summer that went by way too fast. School has now officially started and I am sure everyone is excited to get back to the 5-10 hours a week of studying that Cal Poly recommends. Or was it 25-35 hours?

How far away are we from Thanksgiving break, like two months, right? Fall quarter isn’t the quarter where we get all those Mondays off, is it?

But seriously, my name is John Middlekauff and I’m here to wrap up what’s going on in sports around the country.

Poly men's soccer team routs SJSU, 3-0

The Cal Poly men’s soccer team dominated San Jose State 3-0 Tuesday night at the Sports Complex to improve to 3-3-4 on the season.

The team is changing under first-year head coach Paul Holocher, who was head coach at UC Santa Cruz from 1999-2005. He left the Banana Slugs with an NCAA Division II Championship appearance in 2004 and a record of 109-24-7.

Hardship turns to scholarship for student

This year, 19 CSU students received the Hearst/CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement and one is a student right here at Cal Poly. Melissa O’Neal, 25, is a graduate student focused on plant protection sciences. The hardships she has gone through in her life earned her this award, which includes a scholarship of $3,000.

Back-to-back goals clinch Poly win

Two quick goals midway through the first half put Cal Poly ahead for good as the Mustangs improved to 3-3-4 on the season with a 3-0 win over San Jose State at the Sports Complex Tuesday night.

Cal Poly scored twice within a one-minute stretch in the 33rd and 34th minutes and took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Frankly Speaking

If they made a Disney movie about a volleyball team conquering adversity, I’m convinced Cal Poly would be the featured team.

Two years ago, the program was on the verge of catastrophic meltdown. Players were quitting, the team was losing – a lot – and veteran coach Steve Schlick resigned following the season.
