Over the past weekend, April 4-5, Cal Poly Track and Field traveled to the Bay Area to compete at the Stanford Invitational and Mike Fanelli Classic, where they continued a season full of record-breaking performances.

60 Mustangs participated in the meets, where even more records were shattered and outstanding performances were put on.

Records fall at Stanford

52 Cal Poly athletes competed at Stanford, where the Mustangs broke two school records.

In her first race of the season, last year’s Big West Track and Field Athlete of the Year junior Tatiana Cornejo ran a personal best in the women’s 5,000-meter (15:44.59) to break the former program record by over six seconds.

Following a successful cross country season in which she earned All-West Region honors for the second straight year, Cornejo lost no momentum on the track with an immediately outstanding performance that sits at the 14th best in the West Region and No. 19 in the NCAA this season.

The second record breaker of the weekend, senior Travis Martin, broke the school record in the men’s hammer throw for the sixth time in his Mustang career with a toss of 228 feet, one inch. The throw that beat teammate Rory Devaney’s former record set at the Bulldog Invite on March 8 is currently the eighth-best in the NCAA and No. 6 in the West Region.

Martin and Devaney took first and second place in the event in a strong meet overall from the throwing squad.

Senior Colby Neron (59-0.75) and graduate student Corban Payne (223-4) earned the victory in the men’s invitational javelin and shot-put, respectively. Neron continued an incredible season where he tossed the No. 16 ranked javelin throw in the NCAA earlier in the year by surpassing the 70-meter mark.

Cal Poly’s relay teams also continued their dominance. Repeating their sweep at the Mark Conover Classic, the Mustangs won both the 4×100 and 4×400 men’s relays once again.

Graduate Student Chase Walter, freshman Vincent Atilano and sophomores Alexander Franco and Levi Romero won the 4×400 with a time of 3:09.06, the third fastest in school history.

Walter also impressed in the men’s 400 with a time of 46.07 that was the second fastest time in school history, the current No. 10 best time in the West Region and No. 19 best time in the NCAA.

In the 4×100, senior Noah Bustos, junior MacGregor TeSelle, sophomore Ryan Teeple and Atilano took first with a time of 40.10, the sixth best time in school history and the fastest since 2004.

Personal bests at Mike Fanelli Classic

Eight Mustangs competed at the Mike Fanelli Classic and set multiple new personal bests in two days of action.

Sophomore Sydney Sundgren captured victory in the 3,000 steeplechase with an over 30-second PR of 10:44.07.

Two weeks after breaking the school record in the women’s pole vault, junior Lexi Evans took third in the event (13-8.25), while freshman Rory Catsimanes set a personal best in the 5,000 with a time of 14:07.02.

Cal Poly will be in action next in the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 16-18 and the Mt. SAC Relays on April 17-19.
