McShay: Barden 'best small-school WR'

After playing on Saturdays for the past four years, Cal Poly wide receiver Ramses Barden will likely be making the jump to Sundays this fall, according to one high-profile NFL Draft analyst.

In an e-mail sent Thursday to the Mustang Daily, ESPN NFL and college football analyst Todd McShay praised and critiqued Barden, who completed his Cal Poly career Nov.

Wheelmen club reclaims championship

The Cal Poly Wheelmen cycling club is spinning its wheels no longer, coasting triumphantly to the state championship in college mountain biking at the West Coast Collegiate Cycling Conference Championships on Nov. 16.

Although Cal Poly at one point had won nine years in a row, this year was especially sweet because the Mustangs finished second to Cal the past two times.

Barden honored at Firestone Grill

All-American receiver Ramses Barden, who finished his Cal Poly football career Nov. 29, poses Thursday night with his jersey at Firestone Grill, which hung it to commemorate his accomplishments (including school career records for catches and touchdowns).

Monday, Barden finished fourth in the voting for the Walter Payton Award, which is given to the FCS’ best offensive player.

Firestone to commemorate Barden

For four years, the No. 11 Cal Poly football jersey has been a frightful sight for those facing it.

It was worn by 6-foot-6, All-American receiver Ramses Barden, who set Cal Poly career records for catches (206), yards (4,203) and touchdowns (50).

But he didn’t stop rewriting records at just the school level.

LMU bombs way past Mustangs

Behind the top 3-point shooting display in team history, the Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team defeated Cal Poly 86-77 at Mott Gym on Wednesday night.

Lions guard Lisa Helmers hit six 3-pointers en route to a game-high 22 points. Helmers hit half of the team’s dozen 3-pointers, which tied a team record.

Cal Poly defense stifles USF

The Cal Poly men’s basketball team defeated San Francisco 61-40 in a non-conference game Wednesday night at Mott Gym.

Cal Poly senior guard Trae Clark scored 14 points, a season high, while junior guard Lorenzo Keeler added 13 and sophomore guard Shawn Lewis contributed 10.

Ellerson reflects, prepares to move forward

Two days after his team’s season came to an end, Cal Poly football head coach Rich Ellerson voiced appreciation for what he praised as an extraordinary senior class.

The Mustangs, who were ranked third in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) for seven consecutive weeks before Saturday’s 49-35 first-round playoff loss to Weber State, lost 17 seniors.

Mustangs cruise at home over Idaho

The Cal Poly women’s basketball team routed Idaho 77-60 Saturday to finish the Courtyard by Marriott San Luis Obispo Holiday Beach Classic 2-0.

The Mustangs (4-2) were led by senior forward Megan Harrison’s 17 points. She also contributed four assists.

Cal Poly trailed for just 22 seconds before a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Rachel Clancy gave the Mustangs the lead for good six minutes into the contest.
