Cal Poly is putting San Luis Obispo on the map. According to a November survey by Travel and Leisure magazine, San Luis Obispo is the No. 3 college town in the nation.
“SLO, as locals call it, might be just any California coastal town if not for California Polytechnic State University,” the article said.
Travel and Leisure asked its readers to nominate their favorite towns on social media using the hashtag #TLTowns. The resulting 744 locations were then ranked in 55 categories, including museums, hotels and farmers’ markets.
Burlington, Vt. took first place for its “hippie vibe and thriving artisanal food scene,” while Charlottesville, Va., ranked second thanks to Monticello and the Paramount Theater.
The article praised San Luis Obispo’s free movie showings in Mission Plaza, International Film Festival, coffeehouses, wineries and outdoor activities like kayaking and hiking.
“I’m delighted,” San Luis Obispo Mayor Jan Marx said. “All the reasons the article gave were excellent ones, and I think we’re really lucky to have such a great university and such a great town.”
