In efforts to celebrate cultural diversity and amplify Indigenous voices, Cal Poly Arts presents “Small Island Big Song,” a musical collaboration highlighting 16 “seafaring cultures of the Pacific and Indian oceans,” according to the Cal Poly Arts department. The performance “Our Song” will be held on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Harold Mossi Hall.

According to Billboard, this musical blend with live visuals is “one coherent, jaw-dropping piece.”

“On stage at the PAC, there will be incredible music and dancing by the Indigenous artists of this talented collective, representing their diverse island cultures throughout the Pacific and Indian Ocean,” Cal Poly Arts director Molly Clark said.

According to Cal Poly Arts, the musical blend entails roots-reggae, R&B and folk from Taiwan, Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, Tahiti and other islands to maintain the voice and language of their people.

The performance of “Our Island” is more than just a concert, according to Clark.

“The mission behind the concert and documentary is to raise awareness about how climate change has affected their seafaring nations,” Clark said.

The collaboration of voice and instrument portrays resistance to issues including climate crisis and globalization, according to Cal Poly Arts.

Cal Poly Arts offers a 20% discount to staff and faculty, while students can purchase tickets for $17 at the Cal Poly Ticket Office with proof of student ID.

“This ensemble has toured all over the world at large festivals and venues, and we are fortunate to have them visiting San Luis Obispo,” Clark said.
