As a part of the rapidly approaching Student Success Fee vote, the advisory vote will distinguish what the next step will be.

“An advisory vote is just that, advisory, versus it being binding,” associate vice provost for systems and resources Kimi Ikeda said.

Some choices on campus are made directly by the administration, the university president and the California State University chancellor — students have no say in the binding voting process.

But when the university issues an advisory vote, all currently enrolled or eligible-to-enroll students are able to participate in the advisory vote, which Cal Poly has integrated into the My Cal Poly Portal this year. By making the advisory vote electronic, the university has streamlined the voting process by not having to count ballots by hand.

By doing this, the results of the vote will also be available instantly.

“We’ve used advisory votes as a means to solicit student feedback and advice whenever we’ve proposed to increase student fees,” Ikeda said.

Advisory votes are where the student community can have a say in choices that are made on campus, whether they be budgetary changes or other changes to the Cal Poly community.

“We truly do value what our students have to say and their feedback influences decisions we make as a university,” Ikeda said.
