Police have captured a kidnapping/carjacking suspect they had been searching for since Wednesday evening. At approximately 6 p.m. Nov. 6, police took Grover Beach resident Ryan Soqui into custody at a rest stop in Gaviota, Ca., near Highway 101. Earlier on Friday, police received information that Soqui was going to Santa Barbara to visit a friend, Chris Newman. They conducted surveillance on Newman’s car, a white Toyota Camry. After some time, police confirmed that Newman had a male passenger in the car, later confirmed to be Ryan Soqui. Soqui was arrested for carjacking, kidnapping and robbery. He is being held at San Luis Obispo County Jail.

  1. Its sad… this man is 23 years old, he has so many opertunities in life and has chosen to be a criminal, he could chose to be something in life instead of terorizing other young people that seem to be making a purpose in their life…. wow

  2. I happen to know ryan,an I truly believe that he needs help…but locking him up for life is not the answer.he needs guidence from professionals in the mental feild, not bars. I have never known him to harm anyone personally, and his mental status must have been at a saddening full tilt. I do believe he should be held responsible for his actions, but not for his whole life.to the female that he scared,I am sorry that he frightened you, maybe in time you can go see him an try to work it out…I know how horrible things like that can have on the ability to forgive an move on.To the public eye ryan is guilty…to those of us who really know him he is lost an fustrated an handled it all wrong. How many times have any of you needed help an not gotten it or pushed back because of government or the inability to pay? There are people whocan be saved an deserve another chance…mental problems can be corrected with medications an guidence…I believe ryan needs these things.remember you are loved ryan….!

    1. While (according to your post) it may be true Ryan has issues and has faced significant challenges, it does not absolve him from his decision to carjack, kidnap, and rob a young woman at gunpoint! You simply cannot expect anyone to believe this is forgivable or that his actions were the responsibility of the government?

Based upon what I’ve read concerning this matter, it seems Ryan is capable of making decisions and acting upon them. If help is what he needed, I doubt he expected to find it by forcing his way into some lady’s car, pointing a gun at her and then commanding her to drive here and there in order to rob her blind!

I hope he gets help, too. In prison.

  3. even though many wont agree with my veiws on this subject,I stand firm on the fact that mistakes were made by ryan,an yes the fall out of his behavior is inexcusable…but your harshness an inability to see all what is in the circle is why your comment is an opinion an we all know what that makes you.so until you have mental illness or something of this nature happen to your family…sit back an be still! not everyone agrees with your out put either.I never said he shouldn’t be punished or make amends to the person caught in the middle…I asked for medical attention where its needed an that is for both not just one!so since your so quick to judge…remember this moment for you one day might make a mistake an need the same compassion!

  4. Mental illness is a myth created by Mormon’s to explain believing in a false religion. This kid deems to be a liability. Kidnapping and carjacking does not suggest he needs guidance. It proves he is worthless to society and it is apparent that his mind is a cess pool or useless knowledge. I wouldn’t classify this as a “mistake”; moreover I would conclude that Ryan deserves severe punishment and will most likely spend the rest of his free life jumping from one methadone clinic to another, only necessitated by his lack of an occupation. The only MISTAKE, Kim, is when your father refused to use contraceptives while ram-boning your mother is a careless fashion.

  5. Come on Kim, you’ve got to be kidding! You happen to know Ryan so he shouldn’t go to jail? If you happened to know Charles Manson you’d probably tell the world that he just misunderstood and shouldn’t be in prison. Then you attempt to support your argument by implying that the rest of the world ‘pushes back because of government or the inability to pay’? Are you seriously comparing kidnapping at gunpoint and carjacking to …wait, what exactly are you comparing it to? Your vague ramblings about people who can be saved and deserve another chance are commendable. You apparently don’t realize that the prison system is designed to rehabilitate people just like this, if they are willing to be rehabilitated, but you and I both know that your friend Ryan is just going to join a prison gang, get a lot of prison tattoos and trade his cigarettes for drugs between sessions at the weight bench, where he will bulk up in preparation for his return to his criminal life on the outside. Get a clue, Kim.
