First of all, Miss Jessica Potter, you would be damn lucky to have the honor and privilege of baby-sitting one of my children. And based on your letter, I wouldn’t be surprised if that turned out to be the highlight of your life. If you and your liberal studies colleagues don’t mind being anything more […]

Ben Gay: Too Gay
Jack Ingram Recently the NFL changed its policy for ordering customized jerseys. A man named Barry Gay ordered a customized jersey from the NFL Web site, requesting that his last name – Gay – be printed on the back of the jersey. The NFL promptly informed Mr. Gay that his request to have his last […]

Female engineers can find men too
Please tell me you’re joking. You really think that career-driven women contribute any more to “divorce rates and broken homes” than career-driven men? Any adult who puts his or her career before family contributes to this problem. While many women are more predisposed to be the primary caregiver than their male counterparts, women who have […]

A woman's place in society does not have to be at home
Ms. Potter, I am not the type to criticize what others want to do with their degree but I am appalled by what you have said in your letter. Go ahead and earn your MRS degree if that is what you want to do, but do not under any circumstances try and tell all the […]

A letter for Jessica Potter
In case you’re living in a time warp, this is not the 1950s anymore. This may surprise you, but women can actually play a role in society besides being stuck in the house all day, which seems to be your biggest aspiration in life. Really now, in order to be this house mom that you […]

The truth is, I want to be a stay at home dad
Gee wiz, I am ‘like’ uh, so tired of these stereotypes about my major, guys. Come on, I am just an engineer because I want to meet a soon-to-be well-to-do female child developmentalist or liberal studier that will make all the money so I can be a stay at home dad. Seriously, I want to […]

From Polyratings to Gap, it is a race to the bottom
Khaled Hal Saad Registration for winter quarter began last Thursday. If you’re like me, you have a list of web bookmarks at hand: one for POWER, Half.com … and Polyratings.com. Conceived by fellow computer scientists, Polyratings is the premier source for professor evaluations, and indispensable when choosing classes. But this little tool has major implications […]

Life on the Central Coast is great if you can afford it
I am as distressed about the lack of funding for higher education as is ASI President Tylor Middlestadt. I hope students don’t think that faculty and staff are profiting at their expense. We went for 3 years without a pay increase, and the 3.5 percent salary boost that was just granted falls short of keeping […]

Come on Cal Poly, make your voices heard and represent
On Thursday, October 27th, myself and six other representatives from Cal Poly attended a CSU board of trustees meeting in Long Beach. We were part of a statewide CSU student movement to prevent the continued unfair taxation of students through tuition increases. Every school in the CSU system was represented. Almost 200 of us packed […]

The truth is, liberal studies majors really just want to find husbands
I am so tired of liberal studies majors getting so fired up about being called MRS majors. Why deny the truth? We all came into Cal Poly with one intention; to snag a soon-to-be well-to-do engineer, architect or businessman and live in suburbia for the rest of our happy lives. Honestly, I’ve heard more than […]

Flu blues: It's that time of year again
Jessica Dean and Robin Rodriguez Hey Cal Poly! Go get your flu shot! Your parents aren’t here, so we’ll tell you for them. Why? Because we care, that’s why! Each year about 36,000 Americans die from complications due to the flu, that’s almost the entire population of San Luis Obispo! According to the Centers for […]
